One of the best parts about Halloween is dressing up however you want. You can be a scary ghost, a tasty sandwich, or wear classic cat ears—the sky’s the limit. And let’s not forget about our adorable guinea pigs. Truthfully, your guinea pig doesn’t want to dress up, but we can’t help ourselves as pet owners. Their potato-shaped bodies are already too cute to not adorn with comical costumes.
This post reviews our favorite Halloween costumes for guinea pigs of all sizes. If you know your guinea pig won’t wear a costume, don’t worry. We have some alternatives to share with you as well. So, grab your guinea pig and let’s get started.
A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites in 2022
The 10 Best Halloween Costumes for Guinea Pigs
1. Witch Hat and Cape – Best Overall
Material: | Felt cloth, satin cloth |
Closure Type: | Cloth tie and elastic band |
Back Length: | 5.9 inches |
Neck Size: | 3.1–10.2 inches |
This witch hat and cape costume stick to the classic Halloween spirit for a spooky night, and it’s our best overall option. We love that the material is soft, lightweight, and not constricting in the slightest. This costume will fit any size of guinea pig with an adjustable cloth tie and elastic band. You can even use this costume on other small pets if you want.
The best part is that your guinea pig can’t walk out of it like it would with a bodysuit. But the downside is you have to deal with two neck bands which could be dangerous. You also need the hat to complete the look. Otherwise, your guinea pig is just wearing a cape.
Overall, we believe this classic Halloween costume is the best option for all guinea pigs.
2. French Beret – Best Value
Material: | Polyester, Synthetic Fabric |
Closure Type: | Hook & Loop |
Back Length: | N/A |
Neck Size: | One size, 5–8 inches |
If your checking account is short on funds, dress your guinea pig in this stylish French beret. This option is best for the money for a few reasons. Not only is it cheap, but it’s also a one-size-fits-all option. Don’t worry about your guinea pig being too big or too small (unless your pig is a baby). Plus, you can use this on other small animals, like a small dog or cat.
We also appreciate how comfy this hat is. It’s not a tall hat, so it should stay on easier. If it does fall off, you don’t have to worry about your guinea pig chewing on loose pieces, except for the chin strap. Just supervise your guinea pig while it’s wearing this hat. Overall, artists and lovers of France will adore seeing their guinea pig in this chic costume.
3. Lobster Costume – Premium Choice
Material: | Polyester |
Closure Type: | Pull-on |
Back Length: | 8 inches |
Neck Size: | N/A |
This lobster costume is an undeniable statement piece and one of our favorites on this list. This costume is 100% polyester and snug enough to fit all your pig’s curves but loose enough to provide mobility. You don’t have to worry about a hook and loop attachment since it’s a pull-on costume.
Of course, your guinea probably won’t like it because it’s an all-encompassing body suit made of thick material. This costume is also the most expensive option on this list. But who could resist a guinea pig lobster? Especially for a SpongeBob-themed Halloween party.
The biggest con is the sizing. It’s a bit ambiguous, but we can safely recommend that larger guinea pig breeds have a better time with this costume.
4. Frisco Chef Hat – Best for Baby Guinea Pigs
Material: | Cotton, Natural Fabric |
Closure Type: | Hook and Loop |
Back Length: | N/A |
Neck Size: | One size, 5–8 inches |
There’s nothing spooky about a chef hat, but it’s ridiculously cute, regardless. The best part about this chef hat is that it’s cheap and a great alternative to a full costume since your baby guinea pig is still growing. It’s a one-size-fits-all hat, so you can use it even after your guinea pig is fully developed. If polyester and synthetic materials aren’t for you, don’t worry. This tiny chef hat is 100% cotton and natural fabric.
There’s an easy hook and loop attachment, so it can hopefully stay on your giddy guinea pig by making adjustments. But that’s never guaranteed with a guinea pig hat. Plus, your guinea pig could chew the hat band, making the hat useless. Even so, many guinea pig owners have had great success with this hat.
5. Bumble Bee Costume
Material: | Polyester, Synthetic Fabric |
Closure Type: | Hook & Loop |
Back Length: | 6.5 inches |
Neck Size: | 8–10 inches |
Number five on our list is this adorable bumble bee costume. It’s almost too perfect for a guinea pig’s potato-shaped body. The material is soft polyester, complete with shiny wings and a bumble bee hat. The bodice and hat have an easy hook and loop attachment, so you don’t have to struggle too much with keeping the costume on your pig.
We also love that the material is lightweight. Some costumes have thick, bulky material, making it difficult for your guinea pig to move around. But this fluffy costume acts like a blanket around your guinea pig’s body, allowing for easy movement and cozy snuggles.
The only con with this costume is that it costs more than other costumes listed, and many guinea pig owners report their pigs being too small for the costume.
6. Prisoner Costume
Material: | Polyester, Synthetic Fabric |
Closure Type: | Hook & Loop |
Back Length: | 6.5 inches |
Neck Size: | 8–10 inches |
Your guinea pig could dress up like an old-timey prisoner, ready for a night of mischief. It even comes with a prisoner number to complete the look. We like that this costume is comfortable, and you don’t need the hat for the entire look to come together. The hat doesn’t form to the head well, but it’s still lightweight and can stay in place with the chin strap.
Guinea pigs can easily walk out of their costumes, but this guinea pig onesie is lightweight and fits perfectly for your average pig. You can make adjustments if needed, though. If you go for this costume, watch out for the white stripes on the outfit. Staining this is easy, especially if your guinea pig is in its cage.
7. Hotdog Costume
Material: | Polyester, Synthetic Fabric |
Closure Type: | Hook & Loop |
Back Length: | 6.5 inches |
Neck Size: | 7–10 inches |
What’s not to love about a guinea pig hotdog with ketchup and mustard? It’s safe to say that this costume is one of the more comical costumes for your guinea pig to wear. Putting it on is simple. There’s no hat or drawstring. You just lay on your guinea pig’s back, then hook and loop the bottom.
Your guinea pig won’t want to wear this hotdog for long since it’s a bulky costume. On top of that, some guinea pig owners say their pet’s backs were too long for the outfit. But it should be fine if your guinea pig can fit a 6.5-inch back length. You can measure your guinea pig to be sure. Overall, it’s a hit with guinea pig owners everywhere, and we have no doubt you’ll love it too.
8. Pineapple Hawaiian Luau Shirt
Material: | Polyester, Synthetic fabric |
Closure Type: | Breakaway |
Back Length: | 6.5 inches |
Neck Size: | 8–10 inches |
If you’re throwing a luau for Halloween or dressing up as a hula dancer, try dressing your guinea pig in this pineapple Hawaiian shirt to match. Instead of a hook and loop closure, you have an easy breakaway closure instead. There’s also no hat to deal with, and you don’t need anything else to tie the costume together, although adding a flower would look adorable.
The biggest con is its simplicity. The ensemble isn’t spooky or hilarious, but still cute! Overall, the costume is lightweight and comfortable, allowing your guinea pig to move around effortlessly. Plus, your guinea pig can wear it to other luau parties in the future. Even if it’s not a luau, it’s a great summer costume for any occasion.
9. Serape Costume
Material: | Polyester, Synthetic Fabric |
Closure Type: | Hook & Loop |
Back Length: | 6.5 inches |
Neck Size: | 8–10 inches |
Opt for a colorful costume with this spicy serape and sombrero. Similar to the witch hat and cape, this costume has a beautiful serape (a Mexican cloak typically worn by men) with a sombrero on top. You won’t want to keep the hat on for very long, but the serape alone is eye-catching enough.
The nice thing about this costume is your guinea pig can wear it for Cinco de Mayo if your family celebrates the holiday.
This costume is another hook and loop on the serape with a drawstring on the hat. Overall, it’s comfortable. We don’t care for the decorative fuzzy balls on the serape. Your guinea pig could chew these off easily, risking a choking hazard. But ultimately, it’s a safe wardrobe with proper supervision.
10. Santa Claus Costume
Material: | Polyester, Synthetic Fabric |
Closure Type: | Hook & Loop |
Back Length: | 6 to 7 inches |
Neck Size: | 8–10 inches |
A Santa Clause costume may not seem like a proper Halloween costume. But for those who love A Nightmare Before Christmas, this costume is perfect. You can decorate your guinea pig’s cage for Halloween and dress your guinea in this Christmas costume. It’s an ideal movie-combo outfit. Plus, you can re-use the costume for Christmas, getting more bang for your buck.
Whether you’re a Halloween fan or a Christmas fan, we think this Santa Claus costume is a great option. The silky polyester and fuzzy white cloak fabric are comfortable, although the Velcro chin strap might be a problem. But you don’t need the hat to know what your guinea pig is wearing.
Buyer’s Guide: Finding the Right Costume for Your Guinea Pig
Should You Dress Up Your Guinea Pig?
We agree that pet costumes are adorable. Especially when you dress up the pet as a favorite food like tacos or hotdogs. But don’t force your guinea pig to wear the costume if it doesn’t want to. It’s no fun for your pig, and it’s certainly not fun when you’re spending your Halloween night trying to force a silly costume on a four-legged creature.
Additionally, many pet costumes could be uncomfortable or even hazardous, so we must be mindful of how our pets feel when we dress them up.
When shopping for a costume for your pig, select an outfit that’s safe for your guinea pig.
Look out for the following:
You’ll have a good time if you can check these boxes. Your guinea pig will still be annoyed, but don’t take it personally.

Guinea Pig Costume Tips
You could buy a costume, put it on your guinea pig, then hope for the best. Or, you could check out these guinea pig costume tips and avoid the mistakes guinea pig owners have made in the past.
Opt for Thinner Materials
Dressing a guinea pig isn’t hard, but it’s different from dressing a dog and cat. Guinea pigs have long potato-shaped bodies with short legs. Wearing a costume is more challenging because they scurry across the floor.
So, look for costumes with thin materials. They’re lightweight, breathe better, and aren’t stiff. Thin materials allow for better mobility and keep your guinea pig feeling comfortable. Cotton is the best material, but many costumes are made with polyester and other synthetic fibers. As long as the material is lightweight, your guinea pig should be fine.
Try the Costume Before Halloween Night
Give your guinea pig time to sniff the costume and try it out for size. This gives you time to return the product and find an outfit that fits better if needed. Guinea pigs come in different sizes, so don’t wait until the last minute to see if the costume works.
If you can, try to measure your guinea pig before buying the costume. You don’t want the costume too tight, and you don’t want it too loose either.
Buy More Than One Costume
Buy more than one costume if you can to see what your guinea pig likes and dislikes. Every pig is different, and you’ll find that your pig has preferences. Obviously, their natural guinea pig state is preferred. But it helps to have options. You can always return the costumes your pig doesn’t like.
Limit Usage on Hats
Hats are adorable, but you need to be careful when placing the band around your guinea pig’s neck. All of the hats we listed for you above are 100% safe. Still, it’s wise to take precautions since we don’t always know how our pets will react to costumes, new people, and music.
Give your guinea pig a break throughout the evening by removing the hat every hour or so- that is, if you can keep it on!
Costume Alternatives
Does your guinea pig not tolerate costumes in the slightest? That’s okay. We have some alternatives for you to try so you can still have a festive night.
Bow Ties & Ribbon
Bow ties and ribbons go a long way with animals. They’re not constrictive, so your guinea pig can move about its cage with little to no issues. It’s affordable because you typically get multiple bow ties in one package, meaning a more diverse wardrobe for your pig.
Remember, you want to be careful when placing anything around your guinea pig’s neck. Ensure you can stick two fingers between the band and the neck. Remove anything your guinea pig’s bow tie or ribbon can attach to.
Sweaters
There are tons of small animal sweaters available on the market. This is an excellent way to turn your guinea pig into a studious student. Once you put the sweater on, class is in session. Just make sure your guinea pig doesn’t overheat.
Teddy Bear Clothes
If you’re taking the DIY route, try using teddy bear clothes instead. You can even try large doll clothes. The only downside is you’ll have to plan some time for creating a cute outfit since these clothes aren’t designed for guinea pigs. But if you have a creative streak, go for it!
Decorate the Cage Instead
If your guinea pig doesn’t take kindly to costumes, try decorating the outside of the cage instead. Just don’t let anything into your guinea pig’s cage that it will eat.
Another option is a pumpkin guinea pig bed or even a spooky bat bed. Try thinking outside the box by finding creepy items that aren’t classic Halloween decorations.

Make Halloween Scary and Safe
Halloween is a fun night full of candy, punch, and crazy costumes. It’s easy to forget about your pets in this situation, leaving room for mischief if you’re not watching carefully. You don’t have to watch your guinea pig’s every movement, but keep these tips in mind for a scary and safe Halloween night.
Keep Candy on High Countertops
Even a guinea pig can find its way to the chocolate if the bowl is left low on a coffee table or laid on the floor. This can quickly turn into a trip to the pet emergency room- not the scary party you were looking for. You can avoid this by keeping candy off the floor and high on a countertop or table.
Leave Your Pig Confined
It’s okay to let your guinea pig out to roam for a little bit, but don’t get carried away. People are coming and going, and they could step or sit on your piggy.
If that’s not enough to convince you, your guinea pig could easily meander outside with the front door opening and closing. Some people will take their guinea pigs outside willingly, but we don’t recommend this because you may drop and lose your guinea pig in the dark.
Sadly, people can be cruel to animals on Halloween night, so it’s best to leave your piggy inside. Always supervise your guinea pig when it’s out roaming. Provide an enclosure so people know not to step in that area and keep it away from escape routes.
Watch for Candles
Even if you don’t have a pet roaming around, watch out for open flames. Anyone or any pet could knock over a candle and start a house fire. So, be wary of candles and fireplaces.
Conclusion
Congratulations on making it to the end! Let’s do a review of our favorite costumes.
Our best overall option is the classic witch hat and cape costume. It’s comfortable, fits any size guinea pig, and your pig won’t walk out of it like a bodysuit.
For a simple, affordable option, we recommend the French beret. It’s chic, simple, and a one-size-fits-all option. You can also go with the chef’s hat if you have a baby guinea pig. Either option works, but the chef’s hat is made of cotton and natural material instead.
Remember, don’t force your guinea pig to wear a costume. Just have fun and get creative! And most importantly, have a safe, spooky night.
